The portfolio review that went badly on purpose

Twenty minutes into my first portfolio review, Ana closed my laptop. Not aggressively — gently, the way you close a book you intend to reopen. "Everything in here is technically fine," she said. "Now tell me which project you actually care about."

I picked one. She said, "Then that's your portfolio. One project, told honestly, beats nine told competently."

I rebuilt the whole thing around a single case study and got the next three jobs I interviewed for. But the real lesson wasn't about portfolios. It was that she took me seriously enough to be honest with me the first time we met.

People who correct you kindly, early, are rarer than mentors who praise you. Keep them.
